The Red Bull Music Academy has travelled the world, with previous stops including Berlin, Toronto, London, Melbourne, Cape Town and, most recently, Madrid in 2011. The Academy’s 2012 edition will be held in New York City. One of the most iconic cities on the planet, NYC has been immortalised in countless songs and is the birthplace of many of the world’s most beloved musical movements. With its heady blend of DIY enclaves in the boroughs, disco throwdowns in art galleries and high stakes hip hop boardrooms, New York City still holds an intoxicating sense of possibility, drawing itinerant music makers from across the States and beyond.The Academy invites inspired musicians to apply to be a part of the next journey, that will see five weeks' worth of workshops, concerts, club nights, and all-round musical extravaganzas held in this unique city, exploring its diverse cultural and musical legacies. From Harlem's vibrant jazz scene of the 1920s to the legendary block parties in the Bronx that spawned a global movement now known as hip hop; from the communities that formed around legendary music venues across the time, such as the Shelter, Limelight, Paradise Garage and CBGBs, to today’s varied representations of virtuosity at Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Bowl and Santos Party House; from rock ‘n’ roll experimentalists and modern composers to boogie revivalists and electronic dreamers. Nothing’s equivalent to the New York state of mind.
Interested producers, musicians, DJs, instrumentalists, and vocalists can download an application form from the Academy website from February 2 and send it off with a selection of their tunes by April 2, 2012. About Red Bull Music Academy
The Red Bull Music Academy is an international workshop that was founded in 1998, and touches down in a different city each year. Over two fortnight-long 'terms', some of the finest purveyors of rhythm and sound from all over the world gather between the Academy's walls. Two groups of successful applicants, themselves representing a diverse range of music styles and methodologies, attend lectures by musical pioneers, and work on their own tunes in custom-built studios. By night, they have the chance to perform in some of the host city's most iconic clubs and concert halls.
