INFO:
Following its landmark NYE celebration in London, Defected brings forth the finest virtues of house music with the first of its 2012 season of world-class parties back at its spiritual home, Ministry of Sound.
It’s common knowledge that the US was the first to do house music. But while the secret quickly spread across the Atlantic to massage the grateful ears of European hedonists across the continent, there are some that would argue that if you want ‘proper’ house music, the US is still the place to go. And with artists like MURK and MK on your side, it’s a compelling argument to say the least.
Oscar G and Ralph Falcon aka MURK stand shoulder-to-shoulder with seminal artists such as Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez and Blaze to name but a few. Brought once again to the forefront of the scene in 2011 by their explosive Ibiza anthem ‘Amame’ under their Intruder guise, MURK are responsible for classic house tracks such as The Fog’s ‘Been a Long Time’, Funky Green Dogs ‘Reach for Me’ and 'Fired Up!' and Liberty City’s ‘If You Really Love Someone’. Among the first pioneering house artists to come out of Miami, they have, over the last 20 years, cemented their legacy as producers and DJs of inimitable class and quality.
"MURK have an iconic and legendary sound that was an integral part of the nightlife scene in New York City in the 90s and still influences the scene today" Frankie Knuckles
Marc 'MK' Kinchen is an artist-producer who straddles boundaries as few others can; on the one hand, he’s revered by lovers of house and garage music worldwide his classic 90s productions such as 'Burning', 'Always', K.E.L.S.E.Y's 'Boy' and 4th Measure Men's '4 You' remain floor-fillers to this day. On the other, he has 200-plus unmistakable remixes to his name, for artists ranging from Bizarre Inc to Blondie, not least his mix of Nightcrawlers' 'Push The Feeling On', which became one the biggest house crossover hits of the 90s.
"I remember hearing ‘Burning’ back when I was about 14 living in Wales, listening to Pete Tong’s Essential Selection, it’s one of the records that helped convert me from drum ‘n’ bass and hardcore to house music." Jamie Jones
Between them, MURK and MK have and continue to heavily influence the house scene, not only in the US but in the UK and across the rest of Europe, and have both on the same bill will make for a truly remarkable night.
Supporting them in The Box is Taras van de Voorde; a DJ cut from the same cloth as Joris Voorn, he debuted for Defected In The House in Ibiza last year. Taras was such a force behind the decks that we simply had to bring him to London, whilst on the production side, the release of tracks such as ‘Skyline’, ‘1998’ and ‘The Game’ have brought props from DJs such as Pete Tong, Richie Hawtin, Agoria and Luciano.
The 103 will be taken over by Copyright Recordings; the label of long-term Defected favourites Copyright enjoyed runaway success following its re-launch last year, with every track released breaking into the Traxsource Top 5. Copyright aka Sam Holt and Gavin Mills trace their careers in dance music all the way back to illegal party days in Gav’s case, and northern club Meccas like Cream and the Haçienda in Sam’s, and as a group represent the very best of the UK’s house music heritage.
Supporting Copyright in the 103 will be regular label contributors KORT – whose track ‘Tomorrow’ spent weeks at No.1 spot in the Trasxource download chart last year – and France’s DJ Rocco, who has built up a steady following of admirers over the last decade, with releases on well respected labels such as Freerange, Real Tone and Buzzin’ Fly.
